General Programme FAQs

Q: What is BTSA and what do you offer?
A: Behind the Scenes Academy (BTSA) provides LAMDA tuition, performing arts clubs, and creative enrichment activities during and after school hours. We specialise in building confidence through drama, voice, and performance training.

Q: What is LAMDA?
A: LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) is a prestigious performing arts exam board offering speech and drama qualifications that build communication skills, confidence, and creativity.

Q: Which LAMDA syllabus do you follow?
A: We follow the official LAMDA syllabus and offer a wide range of exam options, including:

  • Introductory stages 1-3

  • Speaking Verse & Prose (Grades 1–8)

  • Musical Theatre (Grades 1-8)

  • Acting (Grades 1–8)

  • Devising Drama (Grades 1-8)

  • Speaking in Public (Grades 1-8)

These exams are tailored to each student’s age and experience and can be taken solo, or in duos.

Q: How do I know which subject to choose for my child?

A: You can see a more detailed description of subjects on our LAMDA syllabus page. If you are still not sure please feel free to reach out and we will be happy to offer any advice.

Q: Does my child need to start at Grade 1 if they have not done LAMDA before?
A: Not necessarily. LAMDA grades are set at the discretion of the tutor and will be assessed individually at the start of each term. We consider age, experience, confidence, and ability before placing a student at the right level to help them succeed and enjoy the process.

Q: Do LAMDA exams count towards UCAS points?
A: Yes! LAMDA exams from Grade 6–8 are recognised on the UCAS Tariff, meaning they can contribute points towards university applications. Beyond qualifications, LAMDA builds real-world confidence, communication, and creativity.

Q: Who teaches the classes and lessons?
A: All sessions are led by trained, experienced tutors with a background in performance and education. Each tutor is DBS-checked and insured.

Q: Is it compulsory to take a LAMDA exam?
A:
LAMDA exams can be daunting, and they are not compulsory, but we highly recommend them. Exams give students a sense of achievement, boost confidence, and provide a clear structure to apply their learning. They also give students the opportunity to put their hard work to good use. If we feel a student isn’t quite ready, we’ll advise you and let you know when your child is ready to enter.

Q: Where do the exams take place?
A: Exams are usually held at the school or can be done outside of school at an approved LAMDA centre. You’ll be notified well in advance.

Q: When do the exams take place?

A: Exams will usually take place twice a year and you will be notified in advance of exam details.

Q: Can I watch my child’s exam?
A: Exams are assessed independently. However, we offer regular performance opportunities, showcases, or video recordings when appropriate.
